Snowfall in Zhemgang
On February 5, 2022, Zhemgang experienced a rare and significant snowfall—the first in decades—due to a strong winter disturbance that brought moisture across Bhutan (nchm.gov.bt). Tali Village in Nangkor Gewog was particularly affected, where cardamom farmers reported extensive crop damage: “During the snowfall, all the leaves were covered by snow… Almost all plants have died now” (bbs.bt).
The heavy snow accumulation also blocked local infrastructure. At Malaya Pass, a two‑kilometer stretch of Gewog Center road was closed for nearly three weeks due to deep ice and fallen trees (bbs.bt). Power and internet services in several gewogs were disrupted until the snow melted.
This unexpected snowfall surprised many residents across central and southern Bhutan. It cut transport links, impacted agriculture, and disrupted daily life—highlighting how uncommon and powerful the February 5 event was for the region (facebook.com).
